Reviews for `Great National Hotel Ballina`

On arrival late Friday afternoon, wasn't great hearing the pool closes to kids at 19.00. Saturday morning, first thing after nice breakfast, me and my 5 year old got ready and headed down to pool. Then was told it was closed due to lessons from 10 to 12. Set us back 2 hours before we left for the day. When we got to pool at noon, it was freezing, 5 year old hated it, both the water and changing rooms so cold. Saturday night, booked dinner in bar at 18.30. Big bash on in bar. Nice crowd not intimidating but was packed and people standing drinking within inches of our table. No one or all things wrecked our weekend but hard to recommend. Rooms and food were very good.

Diarmuid scored 3 / 5 on 13/02/2024

Food was faultless . Was delicious, with quick service and lovely waiting staff. Our major let down was the leisure Club closed at 6. Considering most people only arrive after 4 there this is disappointing. I arrived down at 5.45 and the lights were off!! Decor of place was dated. The TV in room was tiny.only 3 channels working. It was so old looking and I reckon my laptop is bigger. Breakfast staff lovely and can't fault breakfast. Food was the big plus. Lovely also to hear live music

David scored 4 / 5 on 14/07/2023

Very satisfied with our stay, in terms of comfort and value If the hotel continues to offer good value breaks on Lidl breaks we intend to revisit again for another stay in the future

Teresa scored 3 / 5 on 03/10/2022

Front the time we walked into hotel it was excellent. It was our wedding anniversary and when the lady in reception heard she up graded us to a suite which was amazing. We booked our dinner and it was one of the nicest meals we had in a long time .We were too full for desert but just as we were getting up from table a waitress gave us a complimentary dessert and two glasses of champagne on the house. We were only therefor one night but we both were so relaxed and it was such a lovely experience we will be back shortly .10 out of 10

Sarah scored 1 / 5 on 02/08/2022

Didn't enjoy our family trip here. Found staff rude, they put us in a room above noisy wedding so kids had no sleep until 4am both nights. Next day they said they'd move us to another room but that room smelt like sewerage! So we stayed put in the noisy room. Kids club was boring, pool was run down and food wasn't nice.the one and only time I've ever written a bad review for a hotel. Not family friendly at all.

Maria scored 4 / 5 on 13/07/2022

Good breakfast. Nice size rooms. Could have done with more milk and tea bags. Some parts of hotel need fresh coat of paint and some of the armchairs in reception need updating but otherwise than that all great. Also staff are very friendly and helpful. Would recommend.

Margaret scored 5 / 5 on 02/07/2022

It was a very nice clean hotel the staff were all so polite and kind. The children had a wonderful time in the pool. Food was delicious. Wonderful value thanks to Lidl breaks.

Very nice stay in Great National Hotel Ballina Staff very helpful and friendly Fast check in/out Large pool area, shower area in need of updating

Peter scored 3 / 5 on 09/06/2022

The hotel accommodates ukranian refugees, which is ok, but I do not understand why they are allowed to use all the leisure facilities, they have a lot of free time, so the pool was full with them, we didn't feel like going in because it was really crowded. They have the same breakfast as the normal guests, kind of luxory as a refugee, it wouldn't bother me , but I think to provide a free full irish and buffet breakfast for them , the hotel brought down the quality of the breakfast. The hotel had a youth hostel atmosphere, all the refugees walking around in sleepers and tracksuits. They shouldn't take booking for normal guests.

Linda scored 2 / 5 on 16/03/2022

I will not be back to this hotel, a lot of the staff rude. The swimming pool was freezing plus guests cannot use the swimming pool from 10- 12 on Saturdays which I think is mean to guests if they have something planned for the afternoon. It means hanging around the hotel. The hotel itself could do with a make over, very tried looking. Breakfast was just OK, not a variety of fruit. Bed was comfortable. But I will definitely not be back to this hotel

Anne scored 5 / 5 on 13/09/2021

Have been to this hotel a good few times and never disappoints, been with family and this time with a friend. From the road the hotel looks bit drab a bit of a paint needed but once inside it’s bright airy and lovely pictures everywhere. From reception staff to breakfast staff all were lovely and friendly a great asset imo to any business. Room was on first floor, requested twin bed very comfy, warm room ( window opened during might), clean and basic with tea/coffee, a few biscuits would have been a nice extra. Breakfast was booked from check in the night we arrived, plenty of space between tables and well managed. Great choice of little pastries, cereals, juices and the fry was fresh and delicious. We didn’t get to use the pool as we hadn’t long enough there and was sorry hadn’t booked two nights. Will definitely be back PG before end of 2021 and thanks bargain breaks will definitely be using and recommending your site too as great price.

Terry scored 1 / 5 on 08/09/2021

we picked the hotel because of the pool couldnt get in the pool its a few miles outside of town not a walk the hotel decor is dated the staff were nice

Anne scored 3 / 5 on 29/08/2021

We had a lovely few days. Kids made great use of the pool it was like a bath so warm. Staff were very helpful food was very good. Only downside service was slow in restaurant at times but I’d put it down to new seasonal staff or shortage. All in all we would recommend.

Excellent hotel from start to Finnish, all staff were so friendly and very accommodating. Our package was 3 nights b&b + evening meals which were excellent on every evening especially the chicken wings.

Louise scored 3 / 5 on 16/08/2021

We booked in for just the one night to celebrate our friends 40th. For what we paid I have to say I was very happy, food was good, room was OK for the few hours we spent in it. The highlight for me I have to say is the staff, they were excellent very professionally but also just lovely. We booked into the Spa for treatments as well and that was amazing. All in all I'd say if your looking for a cheap night away and aren't very fussy this spot is perfect. You get what you pay for.

Teresa scored 5 / 5 on 12/08/2021

We stayed here for a three day staycation in June. The room was spotless and covid measures were in place. The food was great and staff were lovely and a credit to the Hotel. We will definately be back.

Philip scored 5 / 5 on 25/07/2021

Hotel was very clean, comfortable and reasonably priced. Food was very good. Room was clean and adequate for our needs. Staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. Special mention for Yasmin who served us at dinner time each evening. She was excellent and very friendly with our girls. Only downside was that outdoor dining for dinner at the back area of the hotel was not available.

Marion scored 5 / 5 on 18/07/2021

Had a really nice time here. Food very good. Service fairly quick and staff friendly. Iniscrone only 20 min drive away. Lovely beach there and pitch and putt. Went to Kylemore Abbey about 1hr 30 mins away. Definitely worth the drive but roads very twisty.

My wife and I had a wonderful four day break in Mayo, based here in Ballina. The hotel accommodation is very good and the pool was great for swimming lengths. All members of the hotel staff were very efficient and friendly. Our meals, breakfasts and dinners, were top quality. Excellent stay overall.

Karen scored 4 / 5 on 10/07/2021

Had a lovely stay at Great National hotel. Staff very very nice. Some staff got some slack over service but felt staff were very young and may require more training as a result of the current climate. Had breakfast and dinner every night and found a good variety on menu. Rooms very clean. Pool a godsend when weather was so bad. Would be happy to return.

Mona scored 4 / 5 on 05/07/2021

This was my second time to this hotel. All good, staff v nice. Hard this time round booking everything due to Covid 19- meals swim etc. Forgot to book a massage so lost out this time! ???? would recommend Irish mini breaks for valu

Brid scored 3 / 5 on 04/07/2021

We had a very pleasant stay and would not hesitate staying here again. Would have liked fruit and yoghurt and possibly a little more variety than full Irish for breakfast. All that aside we enjoyed our trip and found plenty to see and do locally.

Had a lovely stay in Hotel Ballina for our two night getaway.Hotel was very clean and staff were very friendly and accommodating. We had dinner in the hotel our first night and was absolutely fantastic,Couldn’t fault the food at all.Our only problem is we didn’t book the second night and the place was full,But they were still going to accommodate us an hour later.Hotel rooms were clean but need a small touch up like bigger TV and better channel quality,That was the only fault I found with the room.Bed was massive and very comfortable,Hotel only a small bit out from the town less than 5 mins in a taxi. Can’t recommend the staff enough all local men and women and really appreciated you being there.North Mayo is an absolute must along the wild Atlantic way,And I would definitely recommend hotel Ballina to friends and family.

Raymond scored 4 / 5 on 22/06/2021

David scored 3 / 5 on 15/06/2021

The hotel is lovely dinner menu and food fab. Staff very friendly. My only issue was breakfast unorganised, cold, hair in my food. Tables and chairs not cleaned down after every customer. Given current global situation this needs to be addressed. But it was a nice hotel with lovely staff.

The Great National Ballina was a lovely hotel . The room was spacious , very clean . Staff were very attentive . Dining was a great experience as the dining area is so big its easy to be socially distant . Food was gorgeous too. It is 3k from Ballina so a little out of the way but definitely value for money.

Robin scored 3 / 5 on 04/09/2020

The staff were very good and though the menu was limited because of Covid 19 the food was really tasty and well presented. Top marks to the chefs. We had 6 meals there. The hotel conformed to all the Covid 19 regulations and we felt at ease . If I was to critise anything it would be structural. Some of the foyer funiture is past its sell by date and certainly the bedroom we had needed upgrading. The light carpet was host to over 15 stains and first impressions were that the room was dirty. I will give the current situation as being an excuse.

Bernadette scored 4 / 5 on 28/08/2020

Great food and very clean and organised hotel. Staff were lovely. Great value for money. Will be back!

Joanne scored 2 / 5 on 24/08/2020

I think the hotel has a lot of potential and I understand the challenges you face with Covid, but I felt the cleanliness of the room could have been better and I found the breakfast to be really poor... even if the buffet could not be available, there was no fruit, yoghurt pastries which could have been wrapped and handed out with the hot breakfast. If you could have even had someone explain to you what was available and how it was going to work it would have been better received...some of the staff were also serving with their visors on their head and not covering their mouth and nose. The staff in the restaurant that evening were really pleasant and accommodating and the food was lovely.

Very disappointed with the service at Ballina. Won’t be back

Claire scored 1 / 5 on 15/08/2020

We were charged €20 for 2 children’s breakfasts even though we were told via email that the cost of the breakfast was included in a 40€ surcharge to add children to the room. Complained to the hotel via email but no joy! Room was also very shabby- beds were messily made, light broke in bathroom and no tv remote in rooms. Very disappointed and won’t be back even though we have been many times before without issue

Rita scored 4 / 5 on 15/08/2020

Lovely staff, very friendly. Swimming Pool was really warm, and only a few people allowed to use it at one time, which was great. We booked for 5 oclock most evenings and more or less had the pool to ourselves. The food was lovely and the deserts were devine. The hotel was very clean and all Covid restrictions were handled really well. Hand gel at every door etc. I would stay here again.

We stayed here on the 1st night the hotel opened after lockdown and can’t say a bad word about it. The food was excellent, steak cooked perfectly as was breakfast the next morning. The hotel was spotlessly clean with lots of sanitation stations and the staff couldn’t be more helpful . Looking forward to our next visit !

I WOULD RATE THIS HOTEL A 3 STAR. THE HOTEL ITSELF WAS VERY CLEAN AND THE FOOD WAS OK. DINNER WAS NICE, BUT THE BREAKFAST WASN'T THAT GREAT, I THOUGHT. THE SERVICE IS ALSO QUITE SLOW. THERE WAS A FEW BUS TOURS THERE RECENTLY AND IT APPEARED THAT THEY WERE TAKING UP MOST OF THE WAITER'S TIME AND THAT THE REST OF THE GUESTS WERE LEFT UNTIL THEY WERE ABLE TO GET TO THEM. I ENJOYED OUR STAY OVERALL AND THE STAFF WERE VERY FRIENDLY.

James scored 2 / 5 on 09/08/2016

Evening meal was very poor. Breakfast was a disaster ie no soda bread,no eggs on one morning.Fire alarm went off one night - no proper explanation or apology was given.Nobody seemed to be in charge of evacuation process. No fire service came to investigate. On positive side rooms were nice and staff friendly. Hotel located outside of the town, taxi fare €10.00 each way. Grade 4 status - noi in my opinion. Would not recommend. Star Rating 2

Lorraine scored 3 / 5 on 08/08/2016

Had a two night stay here with B and B and one evening meal included. The hotel rooms were very clean (we had two inter connecting rooms which were great as we had a young child with us and it afforded us lots of space). The pool area could do with some attention, it is looking a bit jaded. The staff were all very friendly and helpful but service in the restaurant was very slow (which can be a problem with young children who aren't wired for waiting). The food included in the deal was uninspired and some portions were small, however the A La Carte menu was nicer, especially the crab claw starter and the chowder. An alarm went off close to midnight on our first night as we sat in the lobby area enjoying a drink, at no stage did a member of staff inform us what was going on or if we should evacuate (some people vacated their rooms with their children, all in nightwear and obviously woken from their sleep, with no explanation of what was happening from the staff/management). As mentioned in previous comments the hotel is not well signposted from the road and could easily be missed. All in all it was an enjoyable stay but it is not a 4 star hotel to my mind.

Ellie scored 5 / 5 on 25/07/2016

perfect hotel for families, very clean , lovely breakfast and plenty for the children to do. Staff were so friendly and very welcoming. will use this hotel again and will recommend to family and friends.

Dr scored 2 / 5 on 21/06/2016

Definitely not a 4 star hotel. It was perfectly adequate but there was nothing remotely "luxurious" about it. Very little signing for the hotel when approaching from the town, and the name on the gate is not Hotel Ballina. Either change the name on the gate or update the hotel name elsewhere. We travelled another km looking for another hotel. Some staff were friendly and helpful but some were curt to the point of rudeness. Service at dinner was very slow, too few staff coping with bar and dining room.

Hotel was great! Staff were very friendly and food was excellent. Its a little outside of town but with a large pool and live music on the Saturday night we checked in we felt there was more than enough to occupy us for a night away. I read a few reviews about the worn out chairs and have to say found them strange especially as the rest of the room was very modern and spacious. The old chair seemed out of place. Would recommend this hotel especially for a getaway break.

The hotel was nice and clean, rooms quite spacious. Spa treatments absolutely fantastic (especially massage) and very nice leisure center. We stayed there for 2 nights with dinner option purchased for both night. Food from the set menu was only fair, however on the 2nd night we opted for A La Carte menu (for a supplement of 7 eur per person) and it was amazing.

Hotel itself was very nice, staff friendly and welcoming. However, the dinner included in the deal tasteless and disappointing.

Room was nice and big, staff very friendly and helpful. We felt the room, restaurant and bar area, hotel in general was very cold. Dinner was adequate, breakfast was okay.

Great hotel lovely food and enjoyed our stay. However upon arrival we were told that lidl website had cancelled our booking. Took a bit of time to sort this out which isn't Ideal after a four hour drive and three young kids. Eventually matter was resolved and it didn't spoil our holiday.

Hotel Ballina is a solid half hour walk to the south edge of Ballina proper but there are decent footpaths most of the way in. The hotel itself is quite pleasant. The double room was spacious. The dinners were grand. A note on the meal vouchers: they are good for four courses between two people, picked from a specific menu. Still tasty just not the main menu. Overall four stars is apt.

clean adequate room, although the shampoo dispenser in shower was empty luckily I had my own-,breakast was lovley - but it was the evening dinner where I found that these kind of discount break tends to have its own menu printed on a sheet of A4 - the starter and dessert selections were fine but the main consisted of 4 choices - 2 of which were fish based one chicken curry and one steak, now my wife and I neither are too keen on fish I don't like curry and she doesn't like steak !! that didn't leave a lot to choose from- maybe a pork or lamb dish in place of one of the fish or even better both would have been ideal I brought it to the attention of the manager and we were offered chichen stir- fry which we had to make do with ! but overall apart from that it was grand

Hi , I never like to write a bad review of a hotel especially when the majority of the staff were so friendly and helpful . However it only takes a few hiccups in service to ruin your well earned break. This is what happened to myself, my wife and three children,. We opted for a three night stay with one evening meal included, .Two of my children are teenagers and so were paid for in full as adults. Upon arrival at 3:30 pm. we were informed that our rooms were not ready and so we decided to explore Ballina and come back. Again upon arrival, about an hour later, there was no room, this time the receptionist said it was because she was trying to locate adjoining rooms for our convenience we thanked her but when we got the rooms at 5:45 pm. they weren't adjoining but down the hall from each other. Pool closed at 6:00 pm. so no swim. We got a fold up bed for the youngest but it was inadequate almost folded around him .The second night we opted for our inclusive 2 coarse meal for four adults, the girl dropped the menus on the table and was rude throughout, Luckily half way through she seemed to disappear and we were served by a lovely friendly waitress who redeemed the evening. The meal cost 85 euro when we had desert and paid for the under twelve, this included a bottle of wine 24 euro(Plonk actually, the wine list is really nothing to mention) and included surcharges of 7 euro if you were having steak or fish. The following night we had a top class meal in the town in a gem of a place called Dillon's bar & restaurant here the 3 courses and drinks came to 135 euro not much more than the "free meal".The shower in the boys room was broken and the promise to fix it never materialized. The shower gel was empty and when it was replaced it was with an empty bottle. The breakfast was very poor as if reheated. There was no greeting at breakfast and tables weren't cleared, The girls ran about doing there utmost to please but were clearly understaffed. There were no towels available at the pool we were asked to go back and bring them from the room. On the upside most of the staff were extremely eager to please, no kidding. really nice people and as I've said this was the redeeming factor. The Hotel and rooms were spotlessly clean no complaint there. Hopefully this review is helpful to the management. Fintan.

We stayed from 20th-24th July . Hotel and room were spotless they had a fullirish breakfast plus pancakes which l had every morningand were lovely. Staff were very friendly. No entertainment during the week but its not far from town and plenty going on during the week. We went to a jazz session on Tuesday night it was great. Ballina is a lovely town with very friendly people the girl in the tourist office was very helpful giving us advise on where to go . All in all we really enjoyed our break will be back.

We stayed here as a family with 2 young children and found the family room and kids pool very suitable for our needs, there was also a very good selection at breakfast, we've stayed in bigger hotels where porridge is not available like it is here. Food in the bar and restaurant was also of a high standard, a delay and mix up with our order was promptly resolved and we were offered a discount. We'd stay here again.

Modern hotel with good facilities - we stayed in a family room - a queen a single and a camp bed - spacious room pool was big and clean and kids enjoyed it food was reasonable value parking on site and free of charge hotel busy when we stayed but it did not effect our sleep quality as we had a quiet room I would award it 3.75 stars, Id give it a full 4 stars if camp bed was a proper single bed and a playground on site for kids

Very pleased with the Hotel and Leisure Centre. Breakfast the best I have had in Ireland in a long time. We had dinner on both nights and there was an excellent choice of food on the menu. We would certainly use the Hotel again and advise others to do so. Only fault was that the Voucher did not contain the telephone and address of the Hotel and I had some difficulty in locating it on the first night.

Really enjoyed our stay over the Bank Holiday w'end. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would particularly like to commend Roisin, a receptionist, who dealt very sensitively with me! The hotel was buzzing but there was attention to detail. We loved the late breakfast time. The food was tasty. I would definitely go back. The Hotel is a distance from the town but taxi back was reasonable.

Hi. We are in our mid 50s and we enjoyed our 2 nights B&B 1 evening meal at the Hotel Ballina. All the staff were nice and friendly. Room was very well kept and the bed was comfortably. 15 min outside Ballina there is the lovely inishcrone beach where you can go for a long walks. Ballina is a lovely Town with lots of shops.

We had a 3 day stay at the Ballina Hotel. Nice hotel, a bit out from the town, but we enjoy the piece and quite so we didnt mind. Staff were nice and friendly. Room comfortable and spacious. Pool and gym facilities are good. the only negatives I would have were 1) the noise in the pool from some pump/heater was terrible 2) we had dinner one evening in the restaurant, we were settled down to enjoy our mean when a staff member proceeded to drag the tables around the room. Obviously to set up for a party, at least have 2 people to lift the tables rather than one person draging and screeching furniture around. Spoiled the atmosphere! Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recomment.

Recently stayed here for two nights over October bank holiday weekend. The hotel itself is a lovely building and the room we were allocated was clean and spacious. We had dinner included in our package which we had on the first night of our stay. It was fabulous and the service was great could not fault it. The bar man JJ "I think" was friendly and chatted to us when he was behind the bar. We were so dissapointed to arrive to breakfast next morning. we went down at 10.30 so we were on one of the last sittings Im sure as breakfast finished at 11am. We had to clear our own table and then go and ask for cutlery and then cups and then tea. Nobody greeted us to ask for room number or say "Good Morning". Breakfast itself was not great at all my husband was up getting his breakfast and anothe guest joked with him about the eggs been there since last week !!! So he passed on them. We used all the facilities such as the pool, Sauna, Jacuzzi, Steam room these were all great facilities (steam room is tiny but was really lovely). We went for some lunch in the bar. We were the only people there. My husband ordered potatoe Wedges from the lunch menu ......... Do not order this. One potatoe cut into four pieces with some sort of a sauce on top. For this we were charged €6.95 - for a potatoe ! It was meant to be portion of potatoe wedges with bacon bits and creame fraiche what he got was a side order or wedges. Again no welcome to us here acutally we felt like we were in the way ! We did not have dinner there that evening. Breakfast again same thing not one person clearing tables although the breakfast itself was much better and we went in at the same time as the morning before. We again had to clear our own table and go on the a hunt for cutlery etc. One girl working there Tara spoke to us was very pleasant came over with tea and toast and started to clear space beside us so we could enjoy our breakfast. This hotel has a lot of good points in the services it has to offer but that is it. Dont be going here for a hearty welcome !!!

We had a very enjoyable 2 day stay at the Ballina Hotel. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We took advantage of the pool and gym facilities each morning before a wonderful breakfast and then out sight seeing. The hotel was very clean and well equipped. Will definitely be back.
